There are various drivers in the process of sourcing EEE parts for space use:

There are various drivers in the process of sourcing EEE parts for space use:

Identifying the correct EEE parts: needed quality level, manufacturer, type and the necessary testing and quality assurance measures.

Schedule: The delivery times of EEE parts have a major influence on the equipment schedule. Knowledge of critical schedule drivers and processes to avoid or minimize their risk are mandatory.

Supplier market: For HiRel EEE parts there are many monopolistic suppliers or suppliers who require close control of quality and schedule.

Counterfeit Parts: A threat that affects more and more the space industry and requires a sophisticated approach and continuous improvement in methods to stay ahead.

End customer demand on specific documentation or need for justification for the use of specific parts requiring statements and support by experts.

Compliance to export control regulations.

Logistic complexity: many different part types have to be procured from numerous parts manufacturers at the same time. Additional testing and quality assurance measures have to be organized for a large selection of items in parallel and on time, often involving third parties such as specialized test houses.

The Facts

Tesat-Spacecom as a major producer of space equipment is one of the largest users of high reliability EEE parts in Europe. Today at Tesat’s Parts Agency over 85 experts are deeply involved in all aspects of supply and use of EEE parts in space.

We assist the external customers and the equipment business lines at Tesat regarding the EEE parts selection process, conduct all purchasing as well as quality assurance activities. Finally we also solve any parts related problem that may arise on parts level as well as during equipment production, test and flight operation.

Started in 1972, up to now many thousands of different part types have been procured and thus have established Tesat as Europe‘s largest and most experienced procurer of EEE parts for space.

More than 70 customers worldwide have entrusted Tesat-Spacecom to procure their EEE parts. Besides these we have also been acting as Centralised or Coordinated Parts Procurement Agency (CPPA) for numerous major European programmes.

Dear Readers of the Tesat-Spacecom Parts Agency Newsletter, 50 years ago, the Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins began their historic flight to the Moon. Today, many companies worldwide are preparing new missions to the moon or into the moon orbit. For some of them even this goal is only an intermediate step for a mission to Mars. In the past years, the number of players who have set themselves such targets has grown by orders of magnitude. In the past 25 years, 18 missions were targeting the Moon, now planned for the next 5 years are more than 30 missions.

Dear Readers of the Tesat-Spacecom Parts Agency Newsletter, before the year 2018 comes to an end, we have summarized below some of our activities of the past months. In November, we could successfully finalize all close-out work for two CPPA projects, MTG (Meteosat Third Generation) and for the European Service Module (ESM) Flight Unit 1, a part of the ORION spacecraft. Congratulations to both teams and all supporters!!!

One focus of this edition is the topic of counterfeit EEE parts. Dr. Daniela Staerk of the EEE-Center explains how our customers benefit from the various methods Tesat-Spacecom puts in place to prevent counterfeit parts. Our implemented EEE supply model and long-term experience with handling EEE parts, Product Chance Notice (PCN) and Obsolescence Notice (ON) is the second subject this edition sets a focus on.
